The Tests

Theory Test:

There are some 150 Theory Test centres around the country, bookings can be made over the phone using debit/credit cards or otherwise forms are available for postal applications. The most efficient way to book is via the internet at the direct-gov web site

You need to take both parts of your licence and your appointment letter with you.

On arrival you need to show your documents and sign in. You will be asked to leave ALL personal belongings in a locker.

You will be called to the testing room and shown where to sit.  Don’t worry if you haven’t used computers before staff are on hand to provide all the help you need (except the answers – you need to do that)!

In the multiple choice test questions will appear on the computer screen one at a time and you select the answers simply by touching the screen. You can return to any of the questions later and change the answers if you want to. There are 50 questions in the test and you need to answer 43 correctly to pass. You are allowed 57 minutes for this part of the Theory Test

The second part of the test, the 'Hazard Perception Test', comprises a series of 14 video clips chosen at random from a selection of 200. This test, assesses your ability to identify potential driving hazards as they develop. The 'Hazard Perception Test' will take approximately 15 minutes. You will be given your results for the tests before you leave the test centre - remember, you need to pass both the Multiple Choice Test and Hazard Perception Test in the same session to gain your certificate

If you fully prepare you will not find these tests difficult. Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking the multiple choice questions are guessable – some may well be.  If you don’t study you may fail or worse still you may get lucky and pass but not have sufficient knowledge to take on the roads

If you require any help with either elements please ask me.  I have a number of books available to buy which will help you throughout your driving career

Practical Test:

The practical driving test lasts about 35-45 minutes. You may be accompanied by another person over 16 but they must not interfere in the test in any way.  I encourage my pupils to allow me to accompany them but if you do not want it, I do not do it.

You will probably feel nervous during the test, especially at the beginning. This is normal and the examiner will take this into account.  Think of this as an opportunity to put all you have learnt into practice and show the examiner what you can do, how good you are and how much they can trust you with a full driving licence.

The examiner is testing your driving skills.  He or she will test you in various areas of competency, including observations, control, signaling, applying correct procedures and rules of the road, using appropriate speed and gears etc. You will also be asked to drive independently for approx 10 minutes.

You will also be asked to complete 1 manoeuver, such as reversing into a side road, turning the car around in the road, reverse parking. You may also be asked to complete an emergency stop.

You must have no more than 15 driver errors (minors) to pass your test. If you have any more than 15 or have ANY serious or dangerous faults you will not  pass.

Once you have completed your driving test, the examiner will inform you whether you have passed, or failed your driving test. The examiner will offer you a debrief (your instructor can listen to this as well if you wish). If you are unfortunate enough to have failed your driving test, you must wait 10 working days before you can sit another.

Above all Relax and don’t worry – you can do this and despite what you think the examiner IS human!
